Giants Acquire Pro Bowl TE Darren Waller from Raiders
Waller Traded to New York for Third-Round Pick
Move Follows Carr's Departure
The New York Giants have made a major addition to their offense, acquiring Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller from the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a third-round pick, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The move comes nine days after Waller married WNBA star Kelsey Plum and just weeks after the Raiders released quarterback Derek Carr, one of the team's longest-tenured offensive players.
For the Giants, Waller fills a significant need at tight end. The team has lacked a consistent pass-catching threat at the position since Evan Engram departed in free agency last year. Waller has been one of the NFL's top receiving tight ends in recent years, averaging over 60 receptions and 700 yards per season over the past four years.
For the Raiders, the trade marks the latest departure of a key offensive player. Along with Carr, the team has also released wide receiver Davante Adams and running back Josh Jacobs this offseason.
The trade is a win-win for both teams. The Giants get a much-needed playmaker, while the Raiders gain draft capital to rebuild their offense.
