Arnett Out After Just One Year
Zach Arnett has been out at Mississippi State after just one year as the head coach of the Bulldogs. His departure comes after the team's 5-6 record this season, including a 51-10 loss to Texas A&M on Saturday. This proved to be the final straw for the Bulldogs' administration.
Zach Arnett's Tenure at Mississippi State
Arnett was hired as Mississippi State's head coach in December 2022, after spending the previous three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Ole Miss. He was tasked with replacing Mike Leach, who led the Bulldogs to a 9-4 record in 2022 before his untimely passing in January.
Arnett's year at Mississippi State was a tough one. The Bulldogs started the season 2-0 but lost their next four games and never recovered. Arnett finished his tenure with a 5-6 record.
Mississippi State athletic director Zac Selmon announced Arnett's firing on Monday. Selmon said in a statement that the decision was made after careful consideration and evaluation.
"We appreciate Zach's hard work and dedication to our football program," Selmon said. "However, after a thorough review, we have decided to make a change in leadership."
Arnett is now the second Mississippi State head coach to be fired in the past two years. Joe Moorhead was fired after the 2019 season, and Leach was fired after the 2022 season.
Mississippi State has not announced a replacement for Arnett. However, several candidates are expected to be in the running for the job.
